In the first of its kind, on a
bleak Bank Holiday Monday, 24 brave cricketers from Twyford assembled to
compete for the Twyfest Cup, which now resides at the Golden Cross pub.
The Twyford & Ruscombe CC XII were led by Simon Burr while the Village XII expertly assembled, mentored and inspired by latest club recruit, Ian Rogers. The two teams batted in 6 pairs facing a maximum of 5 over per batting pair. Should a wicket fall (and plenty did), the batsman had to dust themselves down, change ends and prepare for combat once more. TRCC batted first to set the target of approaching 300 from their 30 overs (not forgetting both teams started at 200!). Once all players and a growing spectator gallery had been fed by the excellent Ian Evans (TRCC Fixtures Secretary) on BBQ, watered by local provided beer, the TRCC team took to the field – with beer in hand, naturally. A hotly contested game resulted in a close finish with the village XII falling 20 runs shy of their target but with signs of previous endeavours of cricket and competiveness, next year’s repeat fixture is looking to become a popular sporting dual in the Twyfest fixture card. |
