TRCC vs. Sandhurst 2 - May 4th 2013

And so to the first game of the Berkshire League Div 3 season. A short burst of rain prior to the game placed an added emphasis on making the correct call at the toss but alas Twyford did not and were inserted. The moisture made it a little difficult early on but the fine afternoon meant the track was only going to get better throughout the day. Unfortunately Twyford's top order were clearly out of match practice and with a golden duck in there they were soon 30 odd for 3. Barrable was doing his best at one end to help keep the slips interested whilst scoring steadily. Featherstone managed to hang around, whilst Barrable continued to progress nicely, though ultimately a poor shot saw him fall just short of his century, finishing on a well deserved 90! Burgess and Nichols both made decent contributions and with 10 overs to go 200+ was definitely in Twyford's sights. However it was not to be, and with a flurry of late wickets Twyford had posted a decent score of 182 all out. Probably 20-30 runs short of what looked on the cards but importantly 3 extra overs handed to Sandhurst. Coxwell was the pick of the Sandhurst bowlers picking up 5 wickets.
With the track improving under the pleasant sunshine Sandhurst made a steady start in reply. By drinks they had lost just 1 wicket and things were looking decidedly dodgy for Twyford, with some missed catches not aiding the cause. The run rate however was still hovering around the 4 runs per over though Twyford were struggling to create any chances. A change of bowling did the trick though with Smith and Cochrane creating a bit of pressure and a couple of wickets at last. Sandhurst kept creeping forward though and despite not looking pretty still managed to grab the odd boundary. A change of ends for Cochrane and the introduction of young spin prodigy E. Farrar with just 30 or so required added a bit more excitement. 4 more quick wickets had Sandhurst 8 down, 5 overs to go and still ~15 runs short of the mark. However Sandhurst's tail managed to hold firm and so no doubt with much relief on their part they took the win.
So well done to Sandhurst, excellent tea and as always exemplary hosts but also well done Twyford, an encouraging first game albeit falling just short. Barrable rightly stands out for Twyford with his 90 runs. Cochrane disappointing with the bat made some amends with 4 wickets and but once again just a highlight on E. Farrar who under lots of pressure bowled some wicked balls and took 2 wickets in the final overs - shape of things to come hopefully.
