A very English occupation ... A group of consisting mainly of somewhat past-their-prime men dressed in white, standing in the middle of a field while the rain gently falls - It could only be cricket! TRCC captain H Fort won a good toss on what was an afternoon of variable weather, and placed Cranbourne in to bat. A couple of early catches from father & son team the Forts put the home side in a good mood - But really we has not aided ourselves at all as we had allowed Patel to the crease. A excellent display of batting - smothering the good balls & punishing the bad, he reached his 50 with a mere 65 runs on the board - A commanding display. Crick & Mark also added to the total, the bowlers having no real answer. And while TRCC's ground fielding was good, many catches went down. Nevertheless, the final total of 160 was by no means completely out of reach - There was still a game to be played! The early departure of Woodman was a blow to TRCC, but N Downes & Roberts set about the total with determination, despite the latter having a 'dodgy back'. But a huge 6 from Downes only encouraged more aerial shots, and he soon departed going for another big one. When Roberts fell a few overs later, that was the end of Twyford's resistance. Only a beautifully hit 4 from Morris dancing* down the wicket gave any relief - The last eight batsmen collectively scoring just 24 runs. But - towards the end the sun had emerged from behind the clouds to give us a fine September evening. Despite defeat, it was still the correct way to spend the afternoon. *I was told to put this rather tortured turn of phrase in the report - Don't blame me! |
